Download and read online Every Saturday Vol 1 in PDF and EPUB Excerpt from Every Saturday, Vol. 1: A Journal of Choice Reading, January to June, 1872 This Ali also, at whose tomb the Bab went through the qiiritual crisis here recorded, is a familiar name to most of us. In general, our knowledge of the East goes but a very little way; yet almost every one has at least heard of the name of Ali, the Lion of God, Mahomet's young cousin, and the first who, after his wife, believed in him, and who was declared by Mahomet in his titude, his brother, delegate, and vicar. Ali was one of ahomet's best and most suc cessfiil ca talus; he married Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet sons, Hassan and Hussein, were, as children, favorites with Mahomet, who had no son of his own to succeed him, and was expected to name Ali as his succes sor. He named no successor. At his death Ali was assed over, and the first caliph, or vicar and lieutenant of 0 met in the government of the State was abu-bekr: only the s iritual inheritance of Mahomet, the dignity of Imam, or Igmna!' e, devolved by right on Ali and his children. Ali, Lion of God as in war he was, held aloof from politics and political intrigue, loved retirement and raycr, was the most pious and disintereted of men. At bu-bekr's death he was again passed over in favor of Omar. Omar was succeeded by Othman; and still Ali remained tranquil. Othman was assassinated, and then Ali, chie y to prevent disturbance and bloodshed, accepted the caliphate. Mean while, the Mahometan armies had conquered Persia, Syria, and Egypt; the governor of Syria, Moawiyah, an able and ambitious man, set himself up as caliph, his title was recog nixed by Amrou, the overnor of Egypt, and a bloody and indecisive battle was ought in Mesopotamia between Ali's army and Moswiyah's. Gibbon shall tell the rest In the tem ls of Mecca three Chsregites or enthusiasts discoursed of tge disorders of the Church and State; the soon agreed that the deaths of Ali, Moawiysh, and of his Sicnd Amrou, the Vicere of Egy i, would restore the peace and unity of religion. Sch of the assassins chose his victim, isoned his dagger, devoted his life, and secretly re ai to the scene of action. Their resolution was oqu desperate; but the first mistook the person of Amrou, an stabbed the deputy who occupied his seat; the rince of Damascus was dangerously hurt by the second; A the lawful caliph, in the mosque of Kufa, received a mortal wound fi'om the hand of the third. Download and read online Every Night s a Saturday Night in PDF and EPUB Born in Slaton, Texas, Bobby Keys has lived the kind of life that qualifies as a rock 'n' roll folktale. In his early teens, Keys bribed his way into Buddy Holly’s garage band rehearsals. He took up the saxophone because it was the only instrument left unclaimed in the school band, and he convinced his grandfather to sign his guardianship over to Crickets drummer J.I. Allison so that he could go on tour as a teenager. Keys spent years on the road during the early days of rock ‘n’ roll with hitmakers like Bobby Vee and the various acts on Dick Clark’s Caravan of Stars Tour, followed by decades as top touring and session sax man for the likes of Mad Dogs and Englishmen, George Harrison, John Lennon, and onto his gig with The Rolling Stone from 1970 onward. Every Night's a Saturday Night finds Keys setting down the many tales of an over-the-top rock ‘n’ roll life in his own inimitable voice. Augmented by exclusive contributions with famous friends like Keith Richards, Joe Crocker, and Jim Keltner, Every Night's a Saturday Night paints a unique picture of the coming-of-age of rock 'n' roll.

Download and read online When Every Day is Saturday in PDF and EPUB When Every Day Is Saturday is a how-to book to plan for a happy, meaningful retirement. The Grace Retirement Inventory sets a fast opening pace and prompts thoughtful, focused questions about retirement. Some retirees seem to have failed badly while many others appear to be happy and successful. What was their guide to success? Dr. Grace's research with seven hundred retirees differentiates this book from all others. Six central themes are developed: 1) freedom and leisure, 2) financial independence, 3) separation from work, 4) family and friends, 5) health, and 6) helping others. Readers evaluate their attitude toward each of these themes and this simple measure predicts their happiness in retirement. The writing is concise, interspersed with comments and stories from the lives of current retirees. Inclusion of these vignettes adds hope, inspiration, and a dash of realism to what lies ahead for every working adult.
