That magnificent city will forever be a part of me although I left there for good when I was only fourteen years old. After all it was there that I learned to distinguish the sound of gunfire from the sound of a car backfiring. It was there that I learned to physically fight my battles and stand my ground. However, what I did not learn was how to give or receive love and affection. There was no time for such matters. Now, as I begin my graceful transition from my thirties into my forties I am bound and determined to discover and experience what I have missed for so many years and pass the new found knowledge on to my children.

Download and read online Victim Healing and Truth Commissions in PDF and EPUB This book intends to contribute to the growing body of transitional justice literature by providing insight into how truth commissions may be beneficial to victims of mass violence, based on data collected in Timor-Leste and on the Solomon Islands. Drawing on literature in the fields of victim psychology, procedural justice, and transitional justice, this study is guided by the puzzle of why truth-telling in post-conflict settings has been found to be both helpful and harmful to victims of mass violence. Existing studies have identified a range of positive benefits and negative consequences of truth-telling for victims; however, the reasons why some victims experience a sense of healing while others do not after participating in post-conflict truth commission processes continues to remain unclear. Hence, to address one piece of this complex puzzle, this book seeks to begin clarifying how truth-telling may be beneficial for victims by investigating the question: What pathways lead from truth-telling to victim healing in post-conflict settings? Building on the proposition that having voice—a key component of procedural justice—can help individuals to overcome the disempowerment and marginalisation of victimisation, this book investigates voice as a causal mechanism that can create pathways toward healing within truth commission public hearings. Comparative, empirical studies that investigate how truth-telling contributes to victim healing in post-conflict settings are scarce in the field of transitional justice. This book begins to fill an important gap in the existing body of literature. From a practical standpoint, by enhancing understanding of how truth commissions can promote healing, the findings and arguments in this volume provide insight into how the design of transitional justice processes may be improved in the future to better respond to the needs of victims of mass violence.

Download and read online Aging Our Way in PDF and EPUB In 1998, Hallmark unveiled their new "One-Hundredth-Birthday" cards, and by 2007 annual sales were at 85,000. America is rapidly graying: between now and 2030, the number of people in the U.S. over the age of 80 is expected to almost triple. But how long people live raises the question of how well they live. Aging Our Way follows the everyday lives of 30 elders (ages 85-102) living at home and mostly alone to understand how they create and maintain meaningful lives for themselves. Drawing on the latest interdisciplinary scholarship on aging and three years of interviews with the elders, Meika Loe explores how elders navigate the practical challenges of living as independently as possible while staying healthy, connected, and comfortable. While most books on the subject treat old age as a social problem and elders as simply diminished versions of their former selves, Aging Our Way views them as they really are: lively, complicated, engaging people finding creative ways to make their aging as meaningful and manageable as possible. In their own voices, elders describe how they manage everything from grocery shopping, doctor appointments, and disability, to creating networks of friends and maintaining their autonomy. In many ways, these elders can serve as role models. The lessons they have learned about living in moderation, taking time for themselves, asking for help, keeping a sense of humor, caring for others, and preparing for death provide an invaluable source of wisdom for anyone hoping to live a long and fulfilling life. Through their stories, Loe helps us to think about aging, well-being, and the value of human relationships in new ways. Written with remarkable warmth and depth of understanding, Aging Our Way offers a vivid look at a group of people who too often remain invisible--those who have lived the longest--and all they have to teach us.

Download and read online Angels and Miracles Grief and Hope in PDF and EPUB Pastor Jim Knotek has experienced quite a few miracles and healings among his parishioners and, especially, at home with his family. Miracles certainly fascinate us; even so, we must focus not on the miracle but on the miracle-maker, Jesus Christ. There would be no other reason for a miracle, unless Jesus was at the very center of it. He and His angels are continually watching over. Angels and miracles are interrelated, intertwined under all conditions and circumstances. As God’s children, we are in a very unique relationship with Him and His angels. Angels and Miracles, Grief and Hope, includes the word grief because most of us have had firsthand knowledge of death and grief among our immediate family, relatives, or friends. Grief and death are not pleasant thoughts, but unfortunately, we can’t get away from those unwelcome intruders. The sadness and desolation of dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and the trauma of losing a spouse are wrapped in the knowledge that there is life after death and that Jesus Christ is God! In his memoir, Pastor Knotek tells his story and shares the glory of God and the place that miracles and angels play in the biggest miracle—life!
