Download and read online The Shere Hite Reader in PDF and EPUB The Shere Hite Reader presents wide-ranging analysis on the individual and society from a renowned thinker on psychosexual development. The book includes new science in addition to previously published material, reflecting Hite's three decades of work probing the roots of human identity through questionnaires and theory. For the first time Hite formalizes her thinking on male adolescence, that boys feel tortured by the new social role they are forced to assume at puberty requiring a show of superiority toward females. In new detail Hite advances her understanding that sex is political, linking the expectation on women to achieve orgasm through coitus with broader patterns of oppression. Hite discusses new research on female adolescence, challenging the "virgin" hymen concept, and documenting that sexual awakening often precedes puberty. Hite also argues that pornography misrepresents male sexuality (not to mention female sexuality), depicting it as singular and silly instead of "full of intriguing, nuanced behavior involving the entire body, not just the penis." The authoritative collection of her work, The Shere Hite Reader challenges the reader to a new way of seeing.

Prayers of Jewish Women

Release Date: 2006
Number of pages: 277
Author: Markus H. McDowell
Publisher: Mohr Siebeck

Download and read online Prayers of Jewish Women in PDF and EPUB Markus McDowell examines how the literature of the Second Temple period portrays women at prayer through an examination of the literary context and character of those prayers. The goal of this work is a greater understanding of how women were portrayed in literary sources and an offering of some fresh insights for the study of women's religious and social roles in the ancient world. The texts are analyzed and categorized within five areas: social location, content, form, occasion, and gender perspective. The prayers are also compared and contrasted with men's prayers in the same sources. The analysis includes locating (as much as possible) the historical, literary, and cultic context of each document in which these prayers appear. By examining all prayers in these texts uttered by women (not just prayers of named or prominent women), and then comparing them with all the prayers of men in those same texts, certain patterns appear. This study adds to our knowledge of women and religion in Second Temple Judaism by primarily exploring patterns that appear among the prayers in the literature of the Second Temple period. While there are fewer prayers by women than men in this literature, the prayers of women are not portrayed as significantly different from those of men in terms of social location, content, form, or occasion. At the same time, the prayers of women exhibit other patterns of language - and in a minor way, form and occasion - that differ from the prayers of men.

Fear of asking a stupid question, anxiety, and just plain embarrassment contribute to the all too common scenario of a patient leaving an office with an unsatisfactory answer to a question, if she asked one at all or the doctor had enough time to address her concerns properly. Even the Internet rarely provides enough correct information. Ask Your Gynecologist was written for all of the women who cannot find the information they need to answer their questions about their bodies. Drs. Thornton and Schramm examine the most commonly asked questions and give valuable insight and advice about everything related to gynecology, including pap smears, the menstrual cycle, family planning, infections and disorders, pregnancy, and surgery. Each chapter is divided into questions so readers can look up specific issues quickly. Examples inspired by real women’s situations are also included so readers can see that all of their questions are valid and worth asking. Advice on how to choose a gynecologist, when to make an appointment, and how to ensure that daughters visit a doctor is also included, as well as a full glossary and index.
